In a visit to a "national revival" exhibition at the National Museum of China in 2012, Xi Jinping referred for the first time to the "Chinese Dream", a concept that has gone on to become central to his political campaigning, and is聽often invoked in conjunction with that of the "rejuventation" of China.聽According to the party's theoretical journal Qiushi, the Chinese Dream is about Chinese prosperity, collective effort, socialism, and national glory.聽Xi said that young people should "dare to dream, work assiduously to fulfill the dreams and contribute to the revitalization of the nation".

[Xi's] goal is a long-term one. He has pledged that by 2049, China will have achieved the 鈥済reat rejuvenation of the Chinese nation鈥, a term that encapsulates both economic and territorial significance. Economically, it means that China will by then be a 鈥渇ully-developed鈥 country, surpassing the US to become the world鈥檚 leading economy. Territorially, it means聽reunifying with Taiwan, which split away from the mainland after the 1949 revolution.

Such goals are crucial to the Chinese Communist party鈥檚 self identity. But it is the way that Mr Xi鈥檚 administration is going about achieving them that is raising profound questions about both Beijing鈥檚 stewardship at home, and its future relations with western powers. --聽
